Project-based learning is a method of teaching that allows students to apply their knowledge and skills by engaging them with experiences as they learn. What constitutes Project-Based Learning
There are three factors to project-based learning.
- An interdisciplinary approach is used as students tackle real-world problems using information and skills from various subject areas.
- Students need to ask questions and build their answers in order to address the challenges that they face.
- Project-based learning also requires rigorous application of the knowledge and skills that students learn, rather than just simple memorization used in wrote-learning.
This method of learning also sees the role of the teacher change. Rather than simply delivering content, the teacher now becomes a facilitator, allowing students to work independently on their own project while they are managed by a watchful eye.
This allows students to make their own decisions and demonstrate their understanding of the topic presented, eventually leading to a larger sense of ownership of their hard work.
Project-Based Learning in STEM
STEM refers to the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics related subjects. Project-based learning is a very important technique that is used in teaching STEM subjects as well.
Students participate in hands-on activity-based learning. Using this type of learning, students are well equipped with many skills that future employers will be looking for. Some of these include, reflective thinking and adaptability, as students need to be able to look at their work analytically and change certain parts or tweak methods in order to make sure that the correct answer is found.
This allows them to be adaptable as well, finding a various number of pathways to solve a specific challenge. They also have to manage their own emotions and expectations, realizing that sometimes, answers may be incorrect, and they may need to go back and re-do the entire process.
Students also learn to take risks by working creatively and collaboratively with their peers. Communications skills and teamwork are encouraged through this type of learning, where students can share their opinions and work together to find answers. Learning together also encourages integrity, as students need to stand up for their work and their ethics, preventing problems like cheating and taking short cuts.
