STEMmates recently ran our Forensic Courses as part of the 2018 School Term 3 Holiday Program. The introductory course is targeted at children from 7 years to 9 years old and the intermediate class is for children aged 9 to 11 years old.
The courses have been designed to give children first-hand experience of the role of Crime Scene Investigators and their use of skills derived from STEM fundamentals and concepts. These fun and interactive courses are project-oriented and children use real laboratory techniques and materials in order to create real theories about different simulated crimes.
These courses aim to promote the powers of critical thinking, observation and reasoning skills. For example, the introductory course introduces ideas of Toxicology in terms of finding out what materials are soluble, whilst also looking at concepts of DNA such as pattern recognition or sequencing.
STEM in STEMmates
STEMmates courses are designed to encompass learning fundamentals and concepts related to STEM – the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics related subjects. Whilst these subjects are taught in schools, our focus on hands-on, activity-based learning methods provides children a platform to learn and use skills such as problem-solving and communication to solve real-life problems.
If we can get children more excited and involved in STEM subjects such as Math and Science, they will be better prepared for future careers and lives that are consistently evolving and being defined by technological advances. Our courses are formulated to give children the exposure to both the hard and soft skills they will need.
But don’t just take our word for it. We have received positive feedback from parents and children who have attended our Forensics courses – and we are thrilled to hear how the children have been given a real workout in critical thinking and informational analysis.
STEMmates’ little investigators are all smiles and jitters of excitement when they talk about what they have learned. From analysing DNA, to tyre tracks, fingerprints and hair samples to learning about triangulation and finding locations, these children definitely went home with something to tell their family and friends about.
In addition to our popular Forensics course, STEMmates offers 6 other activity-based workshops to cultivate curiosity, passion and imagination for STEM. Visit our Facebook and website pages today to find out how you can get your child involved and interested in STEM subjects. They could very well be the next CSI hero, solving the world’s crimes, one at a time and finding out, “whodunnit!”
